➤ Read Essay 3 instructions

Read the instructions carefully and come to class prepared to share your preliminary thoughts about what you’ll say in this essay.

➤ Review & reflect on Drive chapters 4, 5, 6

Read the outlines and skim the three chapters. Try your best to understand Pink’s main points and why he believes these things. Ask yourself: How would our work in EAP class look different if it better satisfied these three basic psychological needs: autonomy, mastery and purpose (“relatedness”)?

➤ Preview Dornyei & Kubanyiova excerpts

Preview this reading and try to get at least a basic sense of what Dornyei and Kubanyiova are trying to communicate. What is “vision”? What is a “future L2 self”? Why do Dornyei and Kubanyiova thing having a vision of one’s future self as a speaker of a foreign language is so important?
