➤ Observe 《怀乡书》excerpts

If you can, read the excerpts from Sheng Keyi’s 《怀乡书》(“The Book of Homesickness”).

Be ready to share one observation about these passages. What do you notice about them? How are the four passages similar? What patterns do you notice about them?

If you cannot read Chinese, you can still do this assignment. What do you patterns or similarities do you notice between these four passages without being able to read them?

➤ Think about tension in “The Mwiko.”

Come to next class ready to answer this question: Where does the tension come from in “The Mwiko”? (There are many sources of tension; see how many you can think of.)

Also, be ready to share your new ending for “The Mwiko.” Remember, it should be an ending where a character does something (a physical action) with the mwiko.
