➤ Begin Essay 2: Essay on an Object
I’d recommend you start writing this essay soon, particularly if you’ll be busy over the holiday. This essay is due a week from tomorrow, on Fri. Sept 18th.
Be sure to reread the instructions before beginning! If you’re not sure what object to write about, feel free to message me on WeChat — I’m happy to chat with you about it.
➤ Read classmates’ poem titles
Read the “micro-poems” with the titles added by your classmates in the Box folder. Pick one or two you especially like — ones that create a feeling of tension or interest, that make the poem seem to “come alive.” Be ready to share the one(s) you chose next class.
➤ Read “The Mwiko”
This is an unpublished story written by a student in a class similar to this one. You can find the story in our Box folder and our WeChat group.
As you read, ask yourself:
What does the mwiko (and making ugali) represent for the different characters (the father, the narrator, the sister)? Be ready to share one sentence that reflects this.
Where does the tension come from in this story?
In addition, please think of a new ending in which a character does something (a physical action) with the mwiko. Be ready to share your idea with us next class.
