EAP101 Fall 2019

Day 11

Tues. Oct. 8

  • Speaker summaries: Lahiri, TSIS Chapter 1

  • Intro to Essay 3

  • Brainstorm ideas for Essay 3

Homework

➤ Review previous readings

Go back and review all our readings so far in this class, in preparation for writing Essay 3.

➤ Read Prentis, “Feel More Fun in French”

As you read, ask yourself: How do these ideas relate to the experiences of the three languages learners in the stories we read, and to the ideas we’ve explored so far, such as “integrative” motivation? Perhaps you can draw on this essay as a source in Essay 3.

➤ Begin Essay 3

Write the beginning of Essay 3 (the first paragraph or two), and be read to read it aloud to us next class. Remember, imagine that you are giving a TED talk to the imaginary audience whose names we wrote on the board before. Be thinking: What will they need to know? What will they want to know?

In addition, please outline the main ideas of the rest of your paper. I’ll collect your first paragraphs and outlines next class and give you immediate feedback.

➤ Read TSIS Chapters 2 + 3

Skim these chapters for the main points. Ask yourself: What do Graff and Birkenstein want me to do, and why?

➤ Bring KEys to Writers next class

You’ll need it!

➤ Speaker tasks:

  • Eldar: Summarize TSIS Chapter 2

  • Minara: Summarize “Feel More Fun in French”

  • Sonic: Summarize Mackey, “Wanting It Enough”

  • Ruihan: Summarize Lin, “English and Me”
