Send me electronic copy (no hard copy) over WeChat. It must be in .doc or .docx format — otherwise I cannot read it.

Note that this time, citations and references should be formatted in MLA style.

Before you submit, consult “Wanting It Enough” by Alison Mackey and the sample student paper on page 271 of Keys for Writers. Figure out the answers to these three questions and make sure you’re doing these things correctly, to the best of your ability, in your paper.

  1. How do we refer to authors in our essays? (See Mackey, “Wanting It Enough.” Notice: How is the author referred to the first time he/she is mentioned? How is he/she referred to each time afterward?

  2. How do we format the titles of our sources? (See the reference list of the sample student paper.Notice: How are italics (斜体字) , quotation marks, and capital letters used in the titles of sources? What patterns do you observe?)

  3. How do we format citations and references in MLA style? (See the sample student paper in Keys for Writers.)

Read They Say , I Say Chapter 1 (“Starting with What Others Are Saying”) and Jhumpa Lahiri, “Teach Yourself Italian.”

As you read the Lahiri essay, be thinking about these questions:

  • What motivates Lahiri to learn and eventually write in Italian? What does she “get” out of it?

  • How are her experiences similar to, and different from, those of Hessler, Lin, and the twelve successful language learners you interviewed?

  • How do her experiences relate to the ideas we’ve encountered so far in this class, such as those put forth in the Rubin, Mackey, and Gardner & Lambert readings?

  • Amber: Summarize TSIS Chapter 1

  • Summer: Summarize Lahiri part 1 (“Exile” and “The Conversations”)

  • Susie: Summarize Lahiri part 2 (“The Renunciation” and “The Diary”)

  • Ellen: Summarize Lahiri part 3 (“The Metamorphosis”)

For those summarizing Lahiri, focus on the question: What motivates Lahiri? What does she “get” out of learning and writing in Italian? (These aren’t two questions; they’re two ways of expressing the same question.)

Note: going forward, the in-class speaking tasks will be graded. I will used the attached rubric to generate the grade.
