If you wish (and if you can) read 蔡崇达’s 《皮囊》and/or 汪曾祺’s《多年父子成兄弟》. Both of these are vivid depictions of characters in the memoir style, and both are short enough and written in simple enough language that an advanced non-native Chinese learner could probably understand and appreciate them. Both of these include annotations by previous students explaining some of the cultural background and context.
