EAP102A - Spring 2020

Class Notes & Assignments

Day 5

M-Tu Jan. 20-21

  • Speakers and discussion

  • Share examples of social scripts

  • What will a good paper do?

Homework

➤ Finish Essay 1 draft

Print out your paper and hand it in next class. Make sure to format it neatly.

I will grade this draft based on the criteria we outline together in class. This grade will count for a small part of the "writing" portion of your grade (see "Course Handbook"), but the majority of the "writing" grade will come from the final project. I'll explain the details of how this will work in a later handout.

Here is a list of the qualities we identified that will likely be key to producing a successful paper. We’ll continue refining this list in further class discussions. For the moment, think about what these mean in the context of your essay:

A good essay will:

  • be interesting

  • be clear and easy to follow

  • have depth

  • have nuance (avoid oversimplifying)

  • be convincing

  • be written in accurate English

  • cite sources according to the conventions of the citation style you choose

➤ Write out a "social script"

Write out the "script" for a social interaction or behavior in the Chinese context, however you understand it. If you include dialogue, it can be in Chinese; there's no need to translate it into English.

You can either type this or handwrite it, but make it neat and in a form you can easily hand in. This assignment is ungraded; as long as you do it in good faith you'll get full credit.

➤ Speakers

Prepare to speak to the class for 2-3 minutes. Either explain the main points you make in your paper, or speak on any other topic of your choice as long as it's related to the themes of this class.

  • Section 1: Suri, Iris, Hester

  • Section 2: Alison, Sean, Letao

Going forward, oral reports will be graded ✓+, ✓, or ✓- using the attached five-question rubric.
