Day 10
Thurs. Nov. 26
What qualities do we want in our own writing?
Types of sources
Homework
➤ Course paper rough draft due next class
Please upload your draft to our Box folder. Please remember that this is a draft, which means it does not need to be perfect, but it should be as close as possible to a complete piece of writing, with beginning, middle, and end. I’ll be better able to give you meaningful feedback if it’s a complete piece of writing rather than a fragment.
Next week we will also do a peer review activity in which you read and respond to your classmates’ writing. Having a complete draft will enable us to do this activity more meaningfully.
➤ Read two short articles and “grade” them
Read “Raising a Multilingual Family is Hard — What Makes it Work?” from Aeon magazine and “Why China’s Campuses Should Dump Their Know-Nothing Love Gurus” from Sixth Tone magazine. For these two articles, please think about the questions: “What qualities do these have that I want in my writing?” and “What qualities do these have that I don’t want in my writing?”
➤ Speakers
Tianji and Ruohan: Summarize one of the articles (each of you will pick one) and tell us what qualities it has that you want in your writing, and what qualities it has that you do not want in your writing.
Wu You and Tianxuan: Give us updates on your language-learning plan. What is your long-term goal? What habit are you trying to acquire? Are you succeeding in keeping up the habit? And what are you learning from the experience?
