EAP101B Fall 2020

Day 1

Tues. Oct. 27

  • Introduction to class

  • Visualization exercise: “Future self”

Homework

➤ Finish writing “future self” scene

Type up the scene of yourself four years from now that you imagined in class. Push yourself to describe the scene as vividly as possible, using specific details. (“Paint a picture in my mind” so that I can see as clearly as possible what it is you imagine yourself being able to do well in English four years from now.)

The length I’m imagining for this assignment is 1 page double spaced (Times New Roman font, 12 point), or about 300-500 words. (It can be longer if you wish, but please produce at least 300 words.) Print your scene and bring it to our next class.

➤ Send me your EAP101A course paper

Email me (austin.woerner@dukekunshan.edu.cn) a copy of your EAP101A course paper, and please include any feedback you received from your professor on the paper that you’re willing to share with me. This will help me understand the issues you and your professor were focusing on last session, so that I can better help you this session.

(If you had me as your EAP professor last session, please ignore this piece of homework!)

➤ Read Oyserman, “Where Does the Future Begin?”

Read this article, asking yourself: Why does Daphna Oyserman think that visualizing your future self can help you as a student? Do you agree? Are these ideas relevant to your English studies? Why or why not?

Wang Ruohan: Be ready to briefly summarize this article for us in class.

➤ Read Snow, “How to Learn a Language” Chapter 2

Read this chapter, asking yourself: How does Professor Snow define “independent language learning” and why does he believe it’s important? Do you already do, or have you ever done, anything that Professor Snow would consider “independent language learning”? If so, please be ready to tell us about it next class!

Please note that this is an unpublished book manuscript so you should not share this with anybody outside this class. Thank you for understanding!

Li Xinguo: Be ready to briefly summarize this article for us in class.

➤ Read Course Handbook

If you haven’t yet read over my Course Handbook, please do so. This answers many commonly asked questions about how this class will work.
