Day 5
Tues. Nov. 12
Speakers and discussion: Presenting ideas from Essay 1
Introduction to Drive
Introduction to outlining
Homework
➤ Read Introduction and Chapter 1 of Drive
Some questions to think about as you read:
What is the “they say”—the thing Pink is responding to?
What is the central question of the book?
Do you agree with Pink’s argument that the “Motivation 2.0 operating system” based on “carrots and sticks” is a problem? Why or why not? (Can you think of examples of situations where “carrots and sticks” [positive and negative incentives] produce bad behavior? Can you think of examples where they produce good behavior?)
Print out the reading and bring it to next class so that you refer back to it easily during discussion.
➤ Outline the information in the Introduction and Chapter 1 of Drive
Print the outline and hand it in to me next class. This assignment will be graded (✓, ✓+ or ✓-). Remember the key characteristics of an outline are:
It should be neat
It should make the connections between the ideas clear
It should be easy to understand when skimmed quickly
See the sample outline for a model.
➤ Summarize Essay 1
Summaries the ideas you expressed in your essay in a single, clear, well-written summary paragraph. I’m imagining something abougt 4-5 sentences long.
What I will do with this paragraph is paste it on the top of your Evernote document, and refer back to it next time I grade one of your essays. As I grade your essay, I’ll give you feedback on whether your essay is doing what you say you want your essays to do, and how it could do that better. I may, perhaps, use this as criteria in my grading.
I will grade this summary paragraph (✓, ✓+, ✓-) based on how well I think I’ll be able to use it for this function.
➤ Speakers for next class:
In addition to summarizing, I’d like each speaker to prepare one interesting question related to the ideas in this chapter that you think would be interesting to discuss in class.
Jonathan: summarize the Introduction
Leon: summarize Chapter 1 pages 13-19 (up to “Three Incompatibility Problems”)
Minara: summarize the rest of Chapter 1.
