Day 7
TUes. Feb. 7
Observations on conventions of narrative prose (Phantom Tollbooth)
Intro to “register”
Discuss Pipilu translation
Homework:
➤ Read Deresiewicz article and translation
Please prepare for next class by reading the article by William Deresiewicz (“We Aren’t Raising Adults, We’re Breeding Very Excellent Sheep”) and your classmates’ Chinese translation of it. As you read, think about two questions and come prepared to share your answers.
Is it readable? Are you able to follow the author’s logic? If there are any places where you can’t, come ready to point out those specific places.
How would you describe the style?
Based on reading the Chinese translation only, what kind of person do you feel like Deresiewicz is—what’s his personality like? Come ready to give an example of a specific place where the language conveys a sense of personality.
➤ go through Pipilu handout, re-translate dialogue
Please go through the Pipilu worksheet and try to answer (or at least think about) each of the questions, and be ready to offer your thoughts on them in class.
Please also make your own new translation of the dialogue between Pipilu and the referee, trying to make the contrast between their voices more distinct, as we discussed in class. Upload your new translation to SharePoint.
