  • Observations on Sylvia’s place essay

  • Creating tension: “Orange Crush” and “Southern Summers”

Homework

➤ Record 3-5 new words and phrases

Write down 3-5 words or phrases you notice between now and next class that you would like to add to your active vocabulary. Make sure to note the context in which you encountered that word or phrase (what was it being used to describe or talk about?) and its collocation (what other words appeared with it?).

➤ Read Object essay instructions, think of an object

This essay is due on Tuesday February 2.

Please read the instructions, and for next class come ready to share an object or two that you think might make a good subject for your essay.

➤ Read “Southern Summers” and “The Mwiko”

As you read, ask yourself: Where does the tension come from in these stories? Come to class ready to share your thoughts on this question.

➤ Read three-line poems, choose 1-2 that have tension

Read the other three-line poems (the ones you didn’t write) and pick 1-2 of them that you think have a sense of “tension” to them. Come to next class ready to explain why.
