Austin's Rules of Thumb

Summarize with a focus.

When you’re summarizing a writer’s ideas, it’s usually because you plan to respond to them. So highlight the ideas you plan to respond to. Tell the reader only the things they need to understand your argument. Every idea you mention in a summary should be something you plan to talk about later.

Don’t:

  • Deluge the reader with meaningless details that are irrelevant to your argument.
