Lightening the tone with "...exactly?"

When asking a question, if you don't wish to sound critical, you can "lighten the tone" by adding "...exactly?" at the end. Use a rising tone of voice.

 

"Sorry, what are you referring to exactly?"

"Sorry, what's the question exactly?"

"Sorry, where are we exactly?"
