EAP102 Spring 2019

Class notes and homework assignments

Day 10

W-Th Feb. 13-14

Homework

MCMP 2019 Table of Contents

Topics chosen by each student, and questions you might address

➤ Add your questions to the table of contents

Some of you didn’t tell me what questions you think a foreign reader might have about the activity you’re writing about. If you haven’t, please add them to the Table of Contents document on 石墨文档.

(Also, notice that I’ve phrased each activity as an action — something Chinese people often do. Feel free to change my wording if you think it’s inaccurate, and revise (or add) the Chinese phrase for this activity.)

➤ Reread Prefaces J and I

Reread these two prefaces. Consider: What will my essay need to do in order to be consistent with the visions laid out in these two prefaces?

➤ Find (or create) a second source

Find another source — and make it be a different kind of source than the last one. Be ready to tell us what your source is and what you learned (or hope to learn) from it. Different kinds of sources may include:

  • an academic article

  • an article in the popular press (newspapers and magazines)

  • an online source like a blog or web forum

  • a film or video clip

  • a work of literature

  • a personal interview

  • a survey (I recommend conducting a survey only if you’ve taken a class that has already taught you how)

➤ Speaker tasks

Describe your topic (your “carrier”) vividly for us. Tell us what central question(s) your essay will attempt to answer. Tell us what sources you’ve found so far, and a couple interesting things you’ve learned from them.

➤ Writing Exercise #5

Write the beginning of your chapter. You’ll probably want to do these two things:

  • describe the activity/behavior that you’re focusing on

  • raise one or more central questions that your essay will attempt to answer

In your essay, please use one word or phrase that you would like to add to your active vocabulary. Put that word or phrase in bold.
