➤ Review TSIS Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and Austin’s Rules of Thumb

Make sure you understand the key do’s and don’t of summarizing and quoting! You will use all these “moves” in Short Essay #6.

They Say, I Say is one of the most widely used "how-to" books about writing used in American college classrooms. It is a required textbook for EAP101 at Duke Kunshan University.

Student 1: Summarize the key do’s and don’ts of summarizing, and give us some examples

  • Charlotte Jiang, Qian Yang, ??

Student 2: Summarize the key do’s and don’t of quoting, and give us some examples

  • Isabella Zhang, Wu Tong, ??

Student 3: Summarize Dörnyei and Kubanyiova’s entire argument, as you understand it

  • Cecilia Yao, Lin Leyi, ??

➤ Short Essay #6 (~400 words)

In the first paragraph (~200 words), summarize Dörnyei and Kubanyiova’s argument in Motivating Learners, Motivating Teachers. Follow Graff and Birkenstein’s advice in TSIS Chapter 2 for how to write a good summary—and feel free to use their templates (or the simplified ones presented in the attached document) to structure your summary. Quote the authors at least once—and make sure to choose your quote (or quotes) well. Review TSIS, if you wish, for advice about quoting.

Then, in another ~200 words, write a response to Dörnyei and Kubanyiova’s ideas. Do you agree with them? Disagree? Agree with some aspect but disagree with others? Explain your ideas in detail, and make sure to maintain focus: Stick to your point, and don’t scatter your attention across a bunch of different ideas.

When you quote or mention specific ideas from MLMT, make sure to cite them in APA format. Include a reference list in APA format (which may just have one reference in it: Motivating Teachers, Motivating Learners).

Grading:

To get a check-plus on the writing component, be sure to:

  • Summarize effectively, following the rules of thumb we’ve talked about in class

  • Make sure the reader understands what you think Dörnyei and Kubanyiova’s main point is—and state this early in your summary

  • Quote effectively, following the rules of thumb we’ve talked about in class

  • Summarize with a focus (see TSIS Ch. 2 for what this means).

  • Respond with a clear focus (the reader should understand clearly what your main idea is)

  • Make a meaningful and thoughtful point, and explain it clearly
