About us
Who are we?
The DKU Intercultural Book Club is a literary society at Duke Kunshan University in Jiangsu province, China.
We are a fellowship of readers from different cultures (at this point, primarily Chinese- and English-speaking ones) dedicated to reading one another's literature and talking about it.
Every month we meet once to discuss a book. Our meetings are open to all members of the DKU community, including current and former students, faculty, and staff.
昆杜跨文化读书会是位于中国江苏的昆山杜克大学的一个文学社团。
我们是一群来自不同文化的书迷，希望阅读并讨论拥有不同文化背景的文学作品（目前主要是中文与英文的）。
每个月我们都会聚到一起讨论一本书。我们的读书会向全体昆杜成员开放，不论是现在的还是从前的学生、教员、职工，都可以来参加。
What do we read?
We read books, primarily fiction, that exist in both Chinese and English editions. (In most cases this means originally written in Chinese and translated into English, or vice versa.) Read in whichever language you wish and come ready to discuss it with friends who may have experienced it in another language!
Our reading list favors books that are widely read and well-loved in the culture they came from.
Books will be selected by the book club host, Austin Woerner. Members are warmly encouraged to contribute book suggestions to our running list of potential titles.
我们读各种各样的书，但主要是那些既有中文版又有英文版的小说。你可以看任何你想看的语言版本，不管是中文还是英文，然后来参加我们的讨论，和那些用另一种语言看书的朋友们聊聊你们的感受有什么不同！
我们的书单倾向于挑选了那些在它们所属的文化中广为流传且倍受欢迎的书籍。
每本书都是由一名“书长”推荐的。如果一名读书会成员觉得自己与一本书有着独特的联系并愿意引导大家参与讨论，即可有当书长的机会。
Why do we read?
We read for three reasons:
To celebrate and encourage reading for pleasure, and foster a culture of reading for pleasure on campus
To share and understand the cultural reference points -- characters, places, and stories -- that have shaped us as people
To give students, faculty, and staff members, both Chinese and international, an opportunity to socialize in a non-academic setting and form friendships based on a shared love of books

When and where do we meet?
We meet once a month; see the schedule on our website for upcoming dates. Usually we will meet on Friday afternoon at 3:30-5:00pm, in the Blue Oasis ampitheater at Dayu Bay.
Occasionally the book club will host "pop-up" events or smaller "spin-off" meetings to discuss other books. These meetings will be announced on the club's WeChat group.

How can I get the books?
At this point we encourage members to buy their own books. Most of the books, both Chinese and English editions, can be bought on Chinese e-commerce sites such as Taobao, or read as e-books.
Several copies of each book will also be available to borrow from the DKU Library and from the “LCC Lending Library” next to CC1070.
目前我们鼓励成员自己购买书籍。大多数纸质书不管中文版还是英文版都能够在购物网站比如淘宝上买到。也可以选择电子书。
部分书籍也可以在昆杜图书馆和CC1070旁边LCC迷你图书馆中借到。
